My MyFitnessPal is a free, easy to use app that tracks diet and exercise to determine optimal caloric intake and nutrients to help you reach your goals. In a Consumer Reports diet rating, MyFitnessPal was rated the best free program in overall satisfaction, "maintenance, calorie awareness, and food variety". Read below to learn how to install, track, create recipes, and check your progress.

Setting Up MyFitnessPal 

  • Using your mobile device, download the free MyFitnessPal App

  • Create an account using a valid email address.

  • MFP will then ask you to enter some information including your goals, fitness level, height, weight, age, gender, exercise level.

 

How to manually enter your macronutrient percentages:

  • From the home screen, click on the “More” button at the bottom of the screen.

  • Then click on the “Goals” heading.

  • Under Goals, select “Calorie and Macronutrient Goals”.  Enter your daily calorie amount as well as carbohydrates, protein, and fat to the percentages that suit you based on your goals.

How to Enter Food and Track Your Macros:

  • To get started click on the diary button at the bottom of the screen.

  • Then click the “add food” button below the appropriate meal. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack)

  • You then can search for a food, enter it manually, or scan the barcode of the food you are eating with your device’s camera. Adjust serving size as necessary and then click the check mark at the top of the screen.

  • When you scan or search for a product make sure the listing has been verified with a green check mark or make sure it matches the label.

Recipes:

  • MFP also has a tab to create recipes.

  • Select the recipe option tab under one of the meals and you can either search the database for ingredients or you can again scan the packaging itself.

  • Create your recipe and save it, and it will always show up in your recipe section.

Check your progress for the day:

  • Scroll to the bottom of the diary screen and click the nutrition button.  You can see a macro grams breakdown by clicking “nutrients”. Now you can see your progress for the day so far and how many grams over or under you are in meeting your daily macro goals.

  • At the end of each day click “Complete Entry”.
